XI NORDIC CONFERENCE IN GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY
Sigmund Karterud, MD, PhD, er professor i psykiatri, tidligere tilknyttet Universitetet i Oslo og Oslo Universitetssykehus hvor han var avdelingsoverlege ved Avdeling for personlighetspsykiatri (nåværende Seksjon for Personlighetspsykiatri og spesialpoliklinikker). Sigmund Karterud har i mange år hatt en sentral rolle i fagfeltet personlighetspsykiatri i Norge, deriblant i etableringen av et klinisk forskningssamarbeid betegnet Dagavdelingsnettverk (nåværende navn Nettverk for personlighetsforstyrrelser), Nasjonal kompetansetjeneste for personlighetspsykiatri (NAPP) og forskergruppen for Personlighetspsykiatri som han ledet frem til 2015. Han er diplomert gruppeanalytiker og har vært lærer ved Institutt for Gruppeanalyse og Institutt for mentalisering. Blant mange utgitte lærebøker kan nevnes «Gruppeanalyse og psykodynamisk gruppeterapi» (1999), «Mentaliseringsbasert gruppeterapi (MBT-G)» (2012) og «Manual for gruppekurs om personlighet og personlighetsproblemer» (2019) og den sist utkomne «Personlighetsfokusert terapi» (2021). Karterud har i dag en privat praksis i Oslo, for individual- og gruppeterapi, og veileder terapeuter og team i inn- og utland i tillegg til en utstrakt undervisningsvirksomhet knyttet til tematikken personlighet, personlighetsforstyrrelser, individuell og gruppeterapi
Sigmund Karterud, MD, PhD, is professor of psychiatry, formerly affiliated to the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, where he was head senior consultant at the Department for Personality Psychiatry. Sigmund Karterud has over many years, had a key role in the field of personality psychiatry in Norway, the establishment of a clinical research collaboration entitled the Norwegian Network of Psychotherapeutic Dayhospitals (currently entitled the Norwegian Network for Personality Disorders), the Norwegian Advisory Unit for Personality Psychiatry (NAPP), and the research group for Personality Psychiatry, which he headed until 2015. He is a qualified group analyst and has been a teacher at Institute of Group Analysis, Oslo and the Norwegian Institute for Mentalization. Among several published textbooks, the most relevant for the conference are “Group analysis and psychodynamic group therapy” (1999), “Mentalization-based group therapy (MBT-G)” (2015) and “Manual for group course on personality and personality problems” (2019). His latest work is “Personality-focused therapy” (2021). Karterud currently runs a private practice in Oslo, for individual- and group therapy, supervises therapists and teams nationally and internationally and lectures on a wide range of topics related to personality, personality disorders, individual and group psychotherapy.
Begrepet container-contained og relevansen i forhold til gruppepsykoterapi
Den engelske psykoanalytikeren Wilfred Bion var en pioner i gruppedynamikk og gruppeterapi. Han formulerte også begrepene container-contained som var en del av hans teori om tenkning. Kort sagt hevdet han at tenkning i utgangspunktet var et dialogisk fenomen i den forstand at tenkeren også hadde et behov for å bli tenkt omkring. Hvis ikke kunne ikke tanker oppstå. Og vi kan tilføye at det grunnleggende tenkende paret, barn-forelder, må tenkes om av gruppen for å komme seg ut av en intim privat tosomhet. Med andre ord: containeren må også containes. I forelesningen vil Bions teori bli supplert med moderne evolusjonsbaserte teorier om tenkning (Michael Tomasello) og emosjoner (Jaak Panksepp) som fremhever menneskets grunnleggende behov for samarbeid. Bion beskriver levende hvordan gruppemedlemmer kan samarbeide om defensive formål. Det går av seg selv og krever ingen utdannelse. Gruppeterapeutens fremste oppgave er å fremme en type samarbeid mellom gruppemedlemmene som både kan akseptere (containe) og utfordre den ultimate frykten hos individet som blokkerer personlighetsutvikling. Den psykoterapeutiske containeren behøver både omsorg/kjærlighet, kunnskap og mot.
The concept of container-contained and its relevance for group psychotherapy
The British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion was a pioneer in group dynamics and group psychotherapy. He also coined the concept of container-contained which was part of his theory of thinking. In short, he claimed that thinking is a dialogic affair, i.e., that the thinker also needs to be thought about. And we may add – the fundamental thinking pair, the child and its parent, needs to be taught about by the group in order to transcend intimate and seclusive privacy. In other words: the container also needs to be contained. In the lecture, Bion’s theory will be supplemented by modern evolutionary theories about thinking (Michael Tomasello) and emotions (Jaak Panksepp), grounded in basic needs for cooperation. Bion described vividly how group members may cooperate for defensive reasons. It comes all too easy and need no formal education. The primary task of the group therapist is to promote a kind of cooperation among the members that both can accept (contain) but also challenge the ultimate fears of the individual that blocks personality development. The psychotherapy container needs care, knowledge, and courage.

Teorilærer og supervisor gennem 25 år på Institut for gruppeanalyse, Århus, hvor hun hadde en sentral rolle i å etablere uddannelsen GOL (gruppeanalyse, organisation og ledelse). Iværksatte GOL ved Institutt for Gruppeanalyse Norge, hvor hun var ansat som lærer gennem 7 år. Organisationspsykologisk uddannelse og Master i organisationspsykologi.
Har været ansat i stab på adskillelige grupperelationskonferencer i Danmark, Sverige og på Færøerne. Som organisationskonsulent har hun været ansat i offentlige og private virksomheder og arbejder stadig med erhvervspsykologi i egen virksomhed.
Birthe Johansen, occupational therapist and group analyst. Theory teacher and supervisor for 25 years at the Institute of Groupanalysis, Århus, established the education GOL (Groupanalysis, Organisation and Leadership). Established GOL at the Intitute of Groupanalysis, Norway and functioned here as teacher for 7 years.

How can the concepts of “container-contained” contribute to management of the conflicting emotions that occurs in the workingplace or are stimulated by change?
The aim of this paper is to contribute with how elements of grouprelations and psychodynamic theory can be combined with the meaning of the concepts of “container-contained” and to demonstrate how actual interventions can be helpful in working with organizational consultancy.
Containment and transitional objects provide support between an organization and its employees during times of change and turbulence in the workplace where irrational and emotional forces are in operation and influence the dynamics in the organizations as a whole. Many emotions are generated in individuals in systems (teams, departments, organizations) and if they are not handled with care, there is a tendency to be deflected from the task into a range of avoidance tactics. Someone has to do the hard work of “containment” in order to address, explore and understand what is going on.
To illuminate the psychodynamic processes in my work with private business and public service I present three cases to illustrate actual interventions in organizational consultancy. I suggest that organizations need a structure and a place to handle difficult feelings stirred up during times of change in the workplace.
Thor-Kristian Island er psykiater, psykoterapeut og gruppeanalytiker. Han var med og etablerte Institutt for gruppeanalyse, hvor han også gjennom en årrekke var instituttbestyrer. Han var også med og stiftet Norsk gruppepsykoterapeutisk forening, hvor han nå er æresmedlem.
I mer enn 25 år var han læreanalytiker, veileder og teorilærer ved det norske utdanningsprogrammet i gruppeanalyse.
Han var medlem av styret i EGATIN i 16 år, og er nå æresmedlem av EGATIN. Han har sittet i «management committee» i GASi. Han sitter nå i «Board of Directors» i IAGP, og er IGA´s delegat i EFPP. Han har publisert artikler om «Large groups» og gruppeanalytisk utdanning.
Thor-Kristian Island M.D. is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and group analyst. He is co-founder and previous director of Institute of Group Analysis (Norway). He was also co-founder and present honorary member of the Norwegian Group Psychotherapy Association. He has been training group analyst, supervisor and theory lecturer at the group analytic training program in Norway for more than 25 years.
He is honorary member of EGATIN, and he has been member of the management committee of GASi. He is current member of the Board of Directors of IAGP and delegate to EFPP. He has published papers on Large groups and group analytic training.

NÅR SAMFUNNSCONTAINEREN RENNER OVER.
I denne presentasjonen vil vi se nærmere på hva som skjer når tåleevnen i samfunnet utfordres. Når samfunnets evne til å romme motsetninger og opprettholde en samfunnssamtale/diskurs hvor det er mulig å reflektere over motsetninger, ulikheter og forskjeller, og finne løsninger som forhindrer uro og vold, bryter sammen.
Når containeren blir full, ser vi hvorledes samfunnet kan henfalle til splitting, projeksjon og ekstrem polarisering, hvor det handler om «oss vs. dem».
Nå for tiden er «dem» gjerne er elitene som dominerer og bestemmer over «oss vanlige folk», og som det må gjøres et opprør mot, enten det skjer i form av kongress-storming i USA eller brenning av munnbind foran Stortinget.

WHEN THE SOCIETAL CONTAINER IS FULL
In this presentation, we will take a closer look at what happens when the tolerability of the society is challenged. When the society's ability to contain conflicts and maintain a social discourse where it is possible to reflect on contradictions, disagreements and differences, and find solutions that prevent turmoil and violence, breaks down. When the container is full, we see how society can succumb in splitting, projection and extreme polarization, where it is about "us vs. them".
At present, "them" tend to be the elites who dominate and control "us ordinary people", against whom rebellion must take place, whether it takes the form of congressional storming in the United States or the burning of face masks in front of the Norwegian Parliament.
